If checks on alt, take a look at the ECM - the engine control module. It is not too expensive and sometimes they are simply bad contacts.

Have you checked the alternator output? Should be about 14 volts are slighlty higher. A new battery hardly compensates for the loss of tension on the alternator, then while you are driving will recharge a bit. I want to make sure you have tested the alternator to not end up replacing the battery and after you break.
