It may be easier to declare bankruptcy. Now, one day, it may be easier to get to do than go through credit services.

wow this is tough. I used a consolidation company debt and have made my credit worse, but my debt was less than eight thousand dollars, for someone in such extreme circumstances as your friend might be worth to use. I went with Clarion. my credit is worse for the use of their services, but they have negotiated with banks and were honest about the payments.
