Savings Bond Interest Rates

Savings Bond Interest RatesSavings Bond interest rates?

In which direction is the interest rate on both EE and I bonds ready to go? I tried to get links to security reasons, but was wondering if waiting until May 1.

The 15 days makes no difference, they adjusted quarterly rates and take time in June! I think it will stay the same! Remember, if you buy a bond, the last day of the month, it is effective on the 1st of this month!

R Hi Tom, I am the guru SavingsBonds.com Savings Bonds - You asked a great question, I hope I can be useful to help!

Your concern is about the same as all others who own or buy Savings Bonds: Where are they now?

Unfortunately, a number of processes in which the government sets the rates became "administrative". Although we can lead you on track, ultimately, an advisory committee makes the final call on what the rate will be, not a 100% scientific method or calculation.

At the end of April, these advisers will consider several factors. For EE bonds, they watch an average of 6 months to 5 years yields of Treasury securities. To see prices of the governor uses, I included a link to historical data of the Federal Reserve. Although I can not calculate the number for you, you can the average data of 6 months and determine a range indicative rates for EE bonds next.

A similar process is used to determine the rate I bonds, but is based on the index of consumer prices (CPI-U) from Bureau of Labor Statistics. The second link below will take you to the U.S. Dept. of Labor index page, you will find the last 6 months data at the bottom of the page.

The I bond rate fixed, is a matter entirely different. Its completely fixed administratively, no formula open to pass through here. Thus, the link I was, again, in the air.

Note the answer to this question is not more correct to say 15 days no difference, at least not like I'm reading. 1 day to that question can make a huge difference, especially now that the EE bonds are locked when you buy the bond (in effect from May 2005) to the interest rate for 20 years! So if you have a savings bond with the date of issue 30 April, and May 1, it could be radically different in 20 years.

I hope this was helpful. For more information please visit our information center SavingsBonds.com - or the value and track your obligations, use our Savings Bond Guru. There is even a free trial period, go ahead and give it a try!

(Yahoo Answers apparently does not have links to FTP sites, but here is the link I-Bond to put in your address bar: ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/c .. .
